BOKUDEN TSUKAHARA: One of the greatest
Japanese masters of KENJUTSU, the Japanese
art of sword fighting, Bokuden Tsukahara
(1490-1572), from the village of TSUKAHARA in
the Ibaraki province, learned KENJUTSU from
his father, a SHINTO priest. He killed his first
opponent at the age of seventeen, in his first
swordfight, and in a few years he was
considered one of the best swordsmen of the
time. According to tradition, he survived
thirty-seven challenges without being
defeated or even wounded. As he grew older
he retreated to the mountains where it is said
that many SAMURAI went to him for advice
and knowledge. In all his life, Bokuden was
injured only six times in battle each time by
an arrowhead. (See also Kendo article).
